Evolution; The Stones Cry Out; Part 2 (Petrification)....... Page 59

By Chris Parker, Copyright s8int.com 2007

PART I of this Article

"When he came near the place where the road goes down the Mount of Olives, the whole crowd of disciples began joyfully to praise God in loud voices for all the miracles they had seen: "Blessed is the king who comes in the name of the Lord!" "Peace in heaven and glory in the highest!"

Some of the Pharisees in the crowd said to Jesus, "Teacher, rebuke your disciples!" "I tell you," he replied, "if they keep quiet, the stones will cry out." …..Luke19

In my last article, I looked at the evidence that had been locked in stone that proved that what we'd been taught about the ages of men and animals on earth had been at best inaccurate.

In another recent s8int.com article, it was alleged that petrified human giants had been discovered in the Grand Canyon near the end of the 19th century.

I also thought of Ed Conrad, a gentleman who has been battling the Atheists and materialists for years over his supposed human and animal petrified finds in Pennsylvania coal mines. Some of his discoveries, including a giant, petrified human skull have been featured in the pages of s8int.com.

In this second part of The Stones Cry Out I took another look back in time through the pages of old newspapers and magazines to see if they reveal anything about other alleged "impossible" petrified finds in coal or other supposedly millions of years old formations.

What we found surprised even us, including a cave found with large petrified men along with drawings of men battling gigantic animals, and yes petrified giants. We can only share a small fraction of all we found here but its clear that there is much that has been forgotten.

The difference between fossilized and petrified?

"It can be a little confusing. A fossil is any evidence of life that has been preserved in rock. So fossils include not just organisms themselves, but also the burrows, marks and footprints they left behind.

Fossilization is the name for a number of processes that produce fossils. One of those processes is mineral replacement.

This is common in sedimentary and some metamorphic rocks, where a mineral grain may be replaced by material with a different composition, bur still preserving the original shape.

When a fossil organism is subjected to mineral replacement, it is said to be petrified. For example, petrified wood may be replaced with chalcedony, or shells replaced with pyrite.

This means that out of all fossils, only the creature itself could be fossilized by petrification. And not all fossil organisms are petrified. Some are preserved as carbonized films, or preserved unchanged like recent fossil shells, or fixed in amber like fossil insects.

Scientists don't use the word "petrified" much. What we call petrified wood, they'd rather call fossil wood. But "petrified" has a nice sound and I like to hear it. It sounds right for a fossil of something familiar that looks lifelike (like a tree trunk)…..About.com

Discovery of Petrified Human Bodies

““In a work entitled: “The Natural History of the Human Races”, lately published, we find described on page 71, two petrified human bodies and also that of a dog, discovered many years ago in a cave of the Cumberland Mountains of Tennessee.

The public are indebted to Mr. Jeffries, the author of the above volume, for the preservation of this discovery, which, to a great extent, like many other antiquities of the West, was lost sight of. He has been untiring in his efforts to present authentic facts, in order to show that this continent has been inhabited by mankind many thousand of ages past.

The peculiar positions in which the petrified bodies were found have excited comment, especially from those who are unbelievers in everything that they themselves have not been the discoverers or not seen.

Though the vandalism of curious visitors to these interesting remains of man have virtually defaced and destroyed them, yet, fortunately, a likeness was taken before they were in the least disturbed, and has been preserved in an engraving in Dr. Joseph Comstock’s work, entitled; “The Tongue of Time and Star of the States,” published in New York in 1938.

Mr. Jeffries’ notice of these wonderful petrifications, in his history above alluded to, has induced us to reproduce in our columns the engraving and remarks of Dr. Comstock.

“There are” he says, “in the Cumberland Mountains, especially in the neighborhood of Laurel Ridge, Tennessee, many natural curiosities. The vicinity abounds with caves, in which are vaulted apartments, large and splendid, and which viewed by torchlight, display a gloomy grandeur. It is a region of animal bones and of petrifications, both animal and vegetable. Some are of men, and some of species of animals now extinct.

But the most interesting of all the discoveries yet made is that of Messers. Chester and Davis, about a mile beyond the Mammoth Grotto, in the mountains referred to, in a cave which they discovered themselves, of one hundred and twenty-five feet into the mountain.

This cave is of difficult entrance, and in it was found the bodies of two petrified men and a petrified dog. One of the men was holding a spear in his hand in a balanced position, as though he was surprised and had just started on a quick walk.

The other is in a sitting posture, with his head as it were leaning against a projected rock.

The Phrenological Journal.

The dog is in a lying posture, upon a flat rock, as if crouched in terror, or as about to make a spring, the features of the body not being distinct enough to certainly tell which.

It is extremely difficult to conjecture what caused the death of the man in the erect posture, and how he should have died standing erect, with a spear in his hand.”

It is not known positively as to which of the races these petrified subjects belonged, but evidently the Caucasian or Mongolian. The symmetry of body and limbs indicated Caucasian mold, while the head and face resembled the Mongolian type.

As regards the time when the bodies became petrified, no age can even be approximated. Everything about them in the cave, as well as upon the surface of the earth above them, shows that a very great many years had rolled by since they first occupied their mysterious positions.

Everything in their subterranean place of abode is of very antique character. The dog does not seem to be of any living species, but resembles the hound most.””

PREHISTORIC MAN
The Union Medicale
July 29, 1883
The New York Times

“Lens is a commune in northern France, in the Pas-de-Calais département. It is one of France's large Picarde cities along with Lille, Valenciennes, Amiens, Roubaix, Tourcoing, Arras, and Douai.

The city is an industrial and mining centre and has a long history of coal mining. Surrounding the town are many large slag heaps”….Wikipedia

Coal was discovered there in 1849 at a depth of 500 feet and in 1853 the discoverers were given the exclusive right to mine there.

Thirty years later, and 24 years after the publication of Darwin’s Origin of the Species, the miners there at Lens would make a discovery which should have given the theory of evolution and its attendant mythologies a death blow.

However, since the theory of Evolution provides men an opportunity to live as though there is no God, Darwinism was too fit to succumb to evidence that would have killed a lesser theory-one that traded in fact.

The story was first announced in the June 2, 1883 edition of the Union Medicale newspaper and thereafter, reprinted in the paper of Record, the New York Times on July 29, 1883. By that time the extraordinary exhibits were being displayed at the Lens Town Hall and were being examined by scientists at the Academy of Science at nearby Lille, France.

“The Union Medicale of June 2 announces a discovery of the highest scientific interest, and which, if it turns out to be real, will show that prehistoric man is no longer a myth. On piercing a new gallery in a coal mine at Bully-Grenay (Pas-de-Calais) a cavern was broken into containing six fossil human bodies, intact—a man, two women, and three children—as well as the remains of arms and utensils in petrified wood and stone , and numerous fragments of mammals and fish.

A second subterranean cave contained 11 bodies of large dimensions, several animals, and a great number of various objects, together with precious stones.

The walls were decorated with designs of combats between men and animals of gigantic size.”

Dinosaurs had only been named dinosaurs some 40 years or so before the discoveries at Bully-Grenay were made but one doesn’t have to stretch ones imagination too far to guess what kind of gigantic animals these “prehistoric” men might have been fighting.

It was truly a more trusting and naive scientific world at that time because today the number of anomalies this story describes would have probably prevented it from seeing the light of day. At least, that's this writers cynical view.

Modern humans in a coal seam (250,000,000 plus years old)? Complete fossilized human bodies? Man and dinosaur interaction? Mammals around at the time of coal formation? Men of “large dimensions”? Giants?

Reportedly, a third and even larger chamber appeared to be empty but was not accessible due to the presence of carbonic acid (carbon dioxide). Attempts were being made to clear away the acid through the use of a ventilator.

The bodies were reportedly brought to the surface; five of them to be displayed locally at the Lens Town Hall and the rest were to be sent to the Academie des Sciences at Lille, some 40 kilometers away, to be studied by scientists at that institution.

Additionally, scientists from the British Museum and the Paris Academie des Sciences were to study the fossils as well.

FOSSIL FIND UPSETS SCIENTIFIC THEORY
Nevada Mining Engineer Brings East a Petrified Horse’s Foot of Modern Shape
Anti Evolution Argument
According to Archaeologists the Present Equine Quadruped Originally Had Five Toes
New York Times, March 9, 1924

“Every once in a while John T. Reid, mining engineer, of Lovelock, Nev., comes East to see his bankers, and when he does he is more likely than not to bring a fossil with him.

Two years ago he brought along what appeared to be the fossilized shoe sole dating back millions of years before there were supposed to be any humans who wore shoes. And it surprised the scientific world greatly.

This year he brought in another find which, if it is all Mr. Reid thinks it is, appears to upset the theory of evolution as applied to the development of the horse. And Mr. Reid cannot be fooled much about fossils, because he has spent his life in the mines of Utah and Nevada and has used his knowledge as a mining engineer and geologist to follow a hobby of fossil-finding”.

Mr. Reid had a library with over 5,000 books on the subject of fossils of which he had a large collection at his home in Nevada. In fact, according to the article his interest in fossils was so well known that many area fossil discoveries were brought to him by his Nevada neighbors.

That is how he acquired the petrified horse's foot. A local train engineer had been stoking the boiler with coal when he noticed a strange piece which did not appear to be coal. Eventually, the fossil made its way to Mr. Reid who became very excited about the find.

He recognized it as the petrified remains of a horses right forefoot, and as he said, that broke all the rules since horses, and a modern horse at that, shouldn’t have been around at the time of coal formation, according to evolutionists.

According to the article, Mr. Reid tried in vain to trace the fossil back to the original coal mine. He learned that evolutionists had believed that the modern horse evolved from very small, five toed equines in the Eocene (55.8 million years ago) and Oligocene and became larger and lost toes over time up through the Pleistocene.

The problem with all this as Mr. Reid saw it was that his fossil of a modern horse was found in coal from the Cretaceous which placed it on the evolutionary time scale as up to 145 million years old—older than its supposed five and four toed ancestors!

Mr. Reid had with him on his Eastward swing samples of other horses hoofs he had found in the desert for comparison. According to Reid, a mine in Willis Utah had been found with animal tracks in its roof, which had been imprinted from above at the time of the coal formation.

Also, miners had told him about finding animal bones embedded in coal. He further described a modern coconut and other vegetation found in coal that closely matched vegetation currently known.

He concluded: “My theory, greatly strengthened by this fossilized horse foot, is that the good Lord originally made these things as we see them today. Although I was an evolutionist in the beginning, I have changed my view.”

Petrified Man Is Found In Old Mine in Oklahoma
New York Times,
January 10, 1922

“Parsons, Kan., Jan 9—The community of Welch, Okla., a coal mining region just across the line, is excited over the finding of what is thought to be a petrified man. A piece of petrified substance closely resembling the body of a man was found in an old coal mine three miles east of Blue Jacket, a few days ago.”

Why were they being so coy? Appears to be a petrified man? Closely resembling the body of a man? Even in 1922 evolutionary theory had permeated society enough for everyone to “know” that what they had apparently found was impossible.

Now, here evolutionists might be keen to point out that many “simulacra” have been found over the years that only appeared to be something. In fact, one had been found in coal which appeared to be a fossilized shoe with clearly discernable threads of quite modern looking manufacture holding the lower and upper parts together. Science said that it was "nature" not some ancient Nike. This writer notes that if all “impossible” fossils are declared to be simulacra because otherwise they would be impossible, it would no doubt be easier as time goes by to declare more and more of them as such; pointing to the ones which nearly fooled us previously as proof.

However, it may well be that the instance of fossils only appearing to be the impossible is well below the instance of the “impossible” actually occurring.

These are impossible only if the theory of evolution is true. The theory of special creation by God in one week with a day of rest has no conflict with petrified men in coal mines.

The Blue Jacket petrified man, if that is what he was, is reported to have been approximately 6 feet tall, and to be complete with the exception of feet and hands, and had a well defined skull and a symmetrically shaped body.

The body had been found in a coal mine along with the tracks of a prehistoric animal and it was the plan to ship him off to the Smithsonian, the graveyard of many an impossible artifact.

The article also noted that the wing and leg bone of a prehistoric animal had been taken from the coal swamp six years prior—and declared to be the genuine article by the experts.

A Petrified Colorado Giant
From the Denver (Col) Tribune
New York Times, October 17, 1881

“It may interest the paleontologist to know that Jacob Daniels, living on Running Creek, 45 miles from the city, while digging down into the earth a few days ago found a curiously shaped stone, resembling in form the breast and abdomen of the human body”.

Mr. Daniels, his curiosity aroused according to the article set about digging up the entire piece.

When he did, he discovered that when the large pieces of stone were put together in their proper form, that the exact form of a human being 13 feet in length was revealed.

A Petrified Giant
Toronto, Ontario, March 25
New York Times, March 26, 1884

This time it was a Mr. George Simpson, of McGillivray who digging around on his farm found something unfortunate to science. Mr. Simpson struck stone which when fully uncovered turned out to be a petrified man some 7 feet 4 and one half inches in height.

The man with the exception of being dead and petrified was in remarkable shape and was reported to have been of a white color along with a dark gray.

A Petrified Giant
From the San Francisco Examiner
Victoria, British Columbia, Aug 5—

“The body of a petrified giant has been found by two farmers who were sinking a well 10 miles from town. The appearance closely resembles that of a human being”

According to the article, it appeared that the man had been scalped, --presumably prior to the petrification. The material of the body was reported to have been as hard as flint and the body itself was complete save for the arms and legs which had broken off.

The article also states that the veins and the ribs are very plainly visible. Reportedly, a group of men, perhaps out of respect for the dead, were dispatched to retrieve the arms and legs which were still in the hole where the giant, who was approximately 12 feet tall had been found.

Find Huge Petrified Fish in Utah
New York Times, July 17, 1920

A petrified fish, (perhaps a Leedsichthys problematicus)large enough to have swallowed Jonah was found in Utah in 1920. If a fifty foot fish can be petrified, then no doubt, so could have any number of 13 feet tall human giants.

The fish was found encased in rock in Garfield County, Utah, about 70 miles from Panguitch, according to the the article. The fish was found by the local sheriff of Garfield County along with a T.W. Smith of Salt Lake City.

The two men had been prospecting for gold in the area.

ANCIENT IMAGE IN ILLINOIS
Brazen Figure Found Imbedded in a Rock at Robinson
New York Times, December 5, 1897

“Robinson, Ill., Dec 4—At a depth of twenty-seven feet, while blasting rock in a well, a brazen image was found. The image represents an angel bearing in one hand the bowl of what is supposed to have been a candlestick. In the other hand is a lamb.”

This article caught my eye because its description reminds me of a strange artifact previously described and pictured at s8int.com, also pictured here.

The article says that the supposition about the image which was embedded found embedded at a significant debt as well as being encased in rock (implying great age) is that it was from a race of intelligent people who lived in the valley prior to the “Indians”.

Antediluvian Sea Monster—A Petrified Leviathan on a Western Plateau
From the White Pine (Nev) News.
New York Times, September 12, 1870

“About 100 miles to the south-east of Hamilton is a high plateau of land, containing an extensive deposit of marine shells and the fossil remains of a large variety of extinct species of fish.

But the curiosity which most challenges the interest of antiquarians is the petrified form of what was evidently once an immense sea monster.

It lies on a high plateau in a position giving rise to the theory that its locale was once a great shoal, and that this antediluvian (pre flood) leviathan floundered and perished on the surface as the water receded. The petrification is perfect…..”

The creature was estimated to have weighed ten tons and had a dual appearance—a humpback whale from the front but: the extremeties extended it was reported into feelers and antennae reminding one of the polypus or devil-fish. The eyes were reported to have been set on either side of the flat, oblong head about 2 feet apart.

The mouth was said to contain three rows of sharp teeth in the front turning into grinders in the jaw. The length was listed as undetermined as toward the tail it apparently blends into the rock formation.

A Petrified Body
The Seneca (N.Y.) Courier Says:
New York Times, March 10, 1878

A Mr. D. V. Benedict paid a man to disinter his wife from the Canoga Cemetery and to transport her to the city of Buffalo to be reburied. She had been buried at Canoga for four years. When attempting to move the body the casket broke apart, and Mrs. Benedict’s body was found not to have decayed.

The clothes had rotted away and lay in tatters around the body which seemed undisturbed but which was as hard as stone and was as white as marble. The body had indeed turned to stone and weighed approximately 400 pounds according to the article.

PETRIFIED BODY OF A WOMAN
MARY ANN GRIER’s LONG ABSENSE AT LAST ACCOUNTED FOR
May 29, 1891 The New York Times

“WANATAH, Ind, May 28—Mary Ann Grier disappeared from her father’s home, two miles south of this place, nearly 40 years ago. A few days ago her body was recovered in an abandoned bog iron-ore pit, without one vestiege of change from the appearance it had known in life.

The last shred of clothing was long ago destroyed, but the same chemicals which removed the garments preserved the flesh.

Not only is the contour of the form perfect as in health, but even the color has remained unchanged. The arms and shoulders are as white as marble, the hands are brown, and one of them bears the stains of the berries with which she was working the afternoon of her disappearance.”

Her beauty had been preserved except for unsightly holes where the eyes had been. Her father, eighty years old at the time was brought to the scene.

“My girl, he cried, my Mary, I thought you were gone away. I thought you were bad”. And it was more than an hour before he could be persuaded to leave her and return to his home.”

It was speculated that she fell into the bog and drowned while picking berries and that the iron-ore and water combined to petrify her body.

Many Petrified Bodies Found
June 14, 1896, The New York Times

Workmen engaged in moving bodies from the old cemetery on Columbia at Troy Michigan discovered twenty one petrified bodies in a remarkable state of preservation. The article recounts that a man named Scofield, who had died ten years earlier was also found in a state of petrification.

A CURIOUS FIND IN COLORADO
New York Times, August 13, 1889

At a depth of 500 feet in the Minnie Mine, near Aspen a cave was discovered. After descending another 200 feet into the cave and caverns a petrified man was discovered intact, head over knees in “Indian fashion”.

The cave contained implements and it was said that the walls were covered in crystallized lime and lead. Other petrified men were found and one was carried out losing his feet and arms.

TWO PETRIFIED BODIES FOUND
December 22, 1884
New York Times

Near Santa Maria California the petrified bodies of a man and a woman in near perfect condition were found in a gypsum quarry near Point Sal. The bodies were found buried side by side with a large boulder separating them. The bodies had been brought to the City on a covered wagon.

Chile:The Only Petrified Human Body in Existence?

August 19: The only petrified human body in existence is on exhibition in the Chile building in the Pan-American Exposition.

It is one of the marvels of science that out of all the caves in which man has dwelt since he came down the tree and took to the burrow for a home not one has preserved the figure of a remote or near member of our race.

Copper mines were worked in Chile before the discovery of America. In one of those mines a human body was found two years ago in a perfect state of petrificaction. It had been buried in a cave in the mine and turned to stone by the action of the earth and minerals by which it was surrounded.

Attached to the body were the tools of the miner of that day, showing conclusively that the accident of the miner's death occurred before the advent of Columbus.

The body is that of a woman, with the back dislocated. It is covered with a green stain from the sulphate and chlorate of copper in the mine and pieces of the Llama skin garment are also stained with the same color.

Click and drag photo to resize.

The parts of the body are in a good state of preservation, lacking a finger and one toe, with the skin well extended and the flesh not shriveled.

Beside the body were found remains of baskets, stone sledge hammer, several stone shovels and hammers, sharpened pieces of wood and a torn bag made of hide.

The Spanish introduced metal tools for mining as soon as they conquered Chile, and it is therefore concluded that this woman was at work prior to that time. Being the only case of the kind that is of absolute authenticity, the specimen has excited great scientific interest. It will be submitted to the inspection of the public within a few days and remain in the Chile building to the end of the Exposition.

Toribio Medina described the body in detail; notice at first glance that it is a well formed individual with the largeness of the hips while as to the face, only the nose is missing.

The hair is braided which is why it was initially thought to be a woman. This apparently anomalous occurrence (petrification of the body) deserves some explanation.

First, more details concerning the bodies’ description; the muscles of the arms and legs barely have any distortion from the pressure of the collapse and from the rocks which covered the body after the landslide.

In parts of the body, especially the arms it is still possible to distinguish the difference between the healthy skin and that around the wounds-to the point where one could expect to see bloodflow.

In the head, which is hidden between the arms, the mouth is contracted and apparently blood sprouted from the ears; the legs are gathered such that one knee is squeezed under the other as if unconsciously a way was south to lessen the blow?

The hair is braided in several places and the eyebrows are perfectly preserved. The clothing consisted of woven waistcloth, of course, llama wool and two ankle wrappings in leather from the same animal, dyed green, probably due to the dissolution of copper oxide.

Considering the “frozen” attitude of the body it is difficult to obtain an accurate measurement but an approximation is five feet seven and one half inches. In any case it was a large, well developed individual.

The petrified hands.
Click and drag photo to resize.

The body was found with a small basket in hand and at his side were also a larger leather Basket, a stone ax and several hammers of the same material tied to wooden handles using straps.

The preservation in stone is easily understood to have been buried away from the body contact with air due to the infiltration of sulfate and copper oxychloride (atacamita) making up the hill where the miner was buried. "

Conclusion:

It was literally quite common for fairly recent burials in graveyards to have been discovered to have undergone various degrees of petrification. Those stories were too numerous to print.

To be sure a number of fakes in this area (giant human petrifications) have been alleged and discovered, but the fact that there are counterfeit $20 bills doesn't keep me from believing that real money exists:0).

In reality, given the right circumstances, the human body will turn to stone providing mute but solid rock testimony to that which had gone before.

The stones do indeed cry out that the ruling scientific paradigm might not hold all the answers--and that the official paradigm-ites may not really want them.

God bless.
