Donald David Kern

Born: July 29, 1924 -- Called Home, March 8, 2004

Donald David Kern served as a U. S. Navy Hospital Corpsman in the South Pacific during World War II. He served from 1942 to 1944.

He was baptized in the Pacific Ocean by one of his buddies who was a minister in the Church of Christ. Don met Myrle Southern at the Prospect Park Church in Minneapolis after he was discharged from the Navy. They fell in love and were married on December 24, 1945.

They went to Abilene Christian College on January 1, 1946. Don had decided to become a Minister of the Gospel rather than study to be a doctor. He graduated in 1949 with a B.A. Degree.

They moved to Mankato, Minnesota to do mission work. He labored for the Lord in Mankato for nine years. He served as a Chaplain at the Mayo Clinic for four years in Rochester, MN.

They then moved to Minneapolis to work with the Brooklyn Center Church of Christ and stayed five years.

The winters were cold and Don wanted to come to California--which they did--moving to Vallejo, San Diego, Montebello, and on to Sacramento.

His longest tenure was here in Sacramento with the Parkway Church of Christ where he worked twenty three years. He was so blessed to work with a "Peer Group" of younger ministers for several years. They were his pride and joy.

He earned a Masters Degree in Counseling from Pacific University in Glendale, CA. He helped many couples have better marriages and closer-knit families.

He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Myrle, 4 children, their spouses, nine grandchildren, and one great grandchild.
