Sightings and Investigations on West Coast

There are now three living-pterosaur investigations happening in at least two West Coast states of the U.S.. As far as I know, none of the persons involved have yet overlapped observations in those three locations; each location has its own team. Investigations #1 & #3 have one thing in common: A key point that got them started was non-team persons (not cryptozoologists) observing, in daylight, a large long-tailed featherless flying creature that suggested a ropen.

Investigation #1
The first involves cryptozoologists that included the late Scott Norman and his associates Garth Guessman, David Woetzel, and several others. The location is still secret. (see Newsletter #008)

Investigation #2
The second involves three or more men who have had at least one possible ropen sighting at another secret location. One creature flew about 30 feet above their heads, a little past midnight. The wingspan was about 4 feet. “The wings were almost the same as a bat. However it had a long neck and beak.” The creature flew too fast to be photographed. Here is the link:

Investigation #3
My own investigation is of a sighting at a wildlife refuge in Southern California in August of 2007. I
will reveal the location in September of 2008. This third investigation involves an apparent ropen with
a length of about “30 feet.” This differs from the first two investigations in that I am not so much looking for the creatures as I am looking for more eyewitnesses of a featherless creature that was said to be flying, in daylight, near a city (but over a wetlands area) one year ago.

Bat-Ropen Connection (Ropens Eat Bats)

I realize that this idea is not new to all of the active investigators: At least some of the creatures observed in the United States (creatures that suggest living pterosaurs) may be flying around with bats at night because they’re catching bats. Why else would American ropens be nocturnal?

In Papua New Guinea, the reefs provide much food for the ropen. The glow of the bioluminescent ropen may help them attract or see fish or see clams (both fish and clams are good protein sources). In the Western United States, it seems that a similar pterosaur-like creature uses bioluminescence while flying around bats; bats can be a good source of protein for large creatures.

Why did it take so long for these American pterosaurs to become investigated? Probably many eyewitnesses thought they were watching shooting stars. And when a large creature, on occasion, would be seen closer, flying with much smaller bats, how could an eyewitness convince anyone that a giant bat (or whatever) had been seen? Eyewitnesses have probably been extremely reluctant to talk.
Please consider what I’ve just written on this subject:bats_ropens

I will eventually put #009 and this (#010) into the archive as well.

Thank you for your interest in living pterosaurs!
