Annual report of the Bureau of American Ethnology to the secretary…..1886 I came across some of the Oakley glyph but.. it was described elsewhere as being four feet by six feet and I didn’t see the portion with the man, beast and reptile.

However, I did began look around in the book and soon found a drawing of a tattoo that looked like a bi-pedal dinosaur. The writer said that it was a fierce wolf-like creature that roamed the mountains.

Still in pursuit of the Oakley Petroglyph, I came upon Picture-Writing Of The American Indians V1 By Garrick Mallery which had a nice reproduction of a portion of the Oakley glyph. Either this was still not the portion described as featuring beasts, reptiles and a man or there just wasn’t anything very exciting there.

On page 116 of that same book there is a very curious ancient petroglyph from the El Paso Texas area. It showed Native Americans on the backs of two creatures that clearly dwarfed them. Two creatures with distinctive horns as we will show.

Some may say that they represent big horned sheep; some may say buffalo. I say that they are more or less the spitting image in terms of profile and scale of parasaurolophus, a “duck-billed” dinosaur. However, the two Native American gentleman are 1)laying prone on the back of one creature and 2)standing upright on the creatures backs; an impossible feat on a bighorned sheep and a dangerous and impossible one on a buffalo. In point of fact, the drawing may even show a stool by which means our rider was able to climb aboard.

The parasaurolophus however, is thought to have been a docile vegetarian and was certainly large enough to accomodate either a prone or a standing Native American on its back. As you know, our section Dinosaurs In Literature, Art and History has been presented to prove that “dinosaurs” did not live millions of years ago but rather within historical time. We have the art, the history and the literature of ancient peoples to prove that.

Of note on this topic is this quote from the New Mexico Museum of Natural History and Science:

“The duck-billed dinosaurs Parasaurolophus and Kritosaurus and the horned dinosaur Pentaceratops were the most common dinosaurs living in northwestern New Mexico during the Late Cretaceous. An extremely important specimen of Parasaurolophus, discovered in 1995, is on display at the museum”.

El Paso, the location of this petroglyph was from 1680 to 1950 a part of New Mexico-not Texas and the areas are in close proximity to each other.

Parasaurolophus meaning “near crested lizard” in reference to Saurolophus is a genus of ornithopod dinosaur from the Late Cretaceous Period of what is now North America, about 76-73 million years ago. It was a herbivore that walked both as a biped and a quadruped. Three species are recognized: P. walkeri (the type species), P. tubicen, and the short-crested P. cyrtocristatus. Remains are known from Alberta (Canada), and New Mexico and Utah (USA). It was first described in 1922 by William Parks from a skull and partial skeleton in Alberta.

Parasaurolophus is a hadrosaurid, part of a diverse family of Cretaceous dinosaurs known for their range of bizarre head adornments. This genus is known for its large, elaborate cranial crest, which at its largest forms a long curved tube projecting upwards and back from the skull. Charonosaurus from China, which may have been its closest relative, had a similar skull and potentially a similar crest. The crest has been much discussed by scientists; the consensus is that major functions included visual recognition of both species and sex, acoustic resonance, and thermoregulation. It is one of the rarer duckbills, known from only a handful of good specimens.

Science tells us that dinosaurs became extinct 65 million years ago and that they reigned on earth for a period beginning 230 million year ago. Science believes that dinosaurs eventually evolved into birds.

The Word of God on the other hand claims that God created the universe including earth, its flora and fauna and man- in six days. Using the Bible’s history as a guide it has been calculated that the earth is less than 10,000 years old?

Which dinosaur view is correct? Dinosaur bones and fossils have been found together with other terrestrial vertebrates and invertebrates and vast fossil bone yards around the globe. A number of dinosaurs have been found with recoverable red blood cells, protein and or blood vessels which only the foolish would believe could have survived more than 65 million years.

Photo: Neolithic, “zoomorphic” ceramic vase from Romania. 5,000 B.C. Uploaded by Londonconstant-Flickr. Click to Enlarge.

Many dinosaur fossils have been found with their heads thrown, their mouths wide open and their tails curled toward their heads as if in agony and as if –they had drowned (Noah’s flood come to mind?).

Here at s8int.com, we thought that if the Biblical view was correct, that we should be able to find examples of these creatures that we now call dinosaurs in the art of ancient peoples. This is in fact what we have found. In the section of the site entitled Dinosaurs in Literature, History and Art, we catalog hundreds of examples.

The photo at the top of this post is of a “zoomorphic” ceramic from the Neolithic period, from Romania, Gumelni-Karanovo culture. It is estimated to have been fired in the 5th millennium B.C. or 5,000 years before Christ. ”

“The Gumelni–Karanovo culture is a chalcholithic (5th millennium) culture, extending along the Black Sea coast to central Bulgaria and into Thrace. The aggregate “Gumelnita-Karanovo VI-Kodjadermen” evolves out of the earlier Boian, Marita and Karanovo V cultures. It is supplanted by Cernavod? I in the early 4th millennium.” Wikipedia

These types of representations most likely would be identified by archeologists as a bird, a duck or as a “zoomorphic” (animal like) or perhaps as a mythical creature.

We note however that it bears a striking resemblance to the duck-billed dinosaurs which were among the creatures that science claims died out 65 million years ago. A number of dinosaurs have been found in Europe and in Romania including hadrosaurs or duck-billed dinosaurs. Here we compare the ancient ceramic depiction with a number of duck-billed dinosaurs.

“Hadrosaurids or duck-billed dinosaurs are members of the family Hadrosauridae, and include ornithopods such as Edmontosaurus and Parasaurolophus. They were common herbivores in the Upper Cretaceous Period of what are now Asia, Europe and North America. They are descendants of the Upper Jurassic/Lower Cretaceous iguanodontian dinosaurs and had similar body layout. They were ornithischians.

Hadrosaurids are divided into two subfamilies. The lambeosaurines (Lambeosaurinae) had hollow cranial crests or tubes, and were generally less bulky. The hadrosaurines (Hadrosaurinae) lacked hollow cranial crests (solid crests were present in some forms) and were generally larger.

The hadrosaurs are known as the duck-billed dinosaurs due to the similarity of their head to that of modern ducks. In some genera, most notably Anatotitan, the whole front of the skull was flat and broadened out to form a beak, ideal for clipping leaves and twigs from the forests of Asia, Europe and North America”. ..Wikepedia

“Curiously, ancient dragon depictions closely match those of dinosaurs and pterosaurs which supposedly became extinct millions of years before man even “evolved”. Could the same be said for certain ancient “sea monster” depictions? Did ancient depictions also closely match those of ancient marine reptiles-which supposedly also became extinct before man came on the scene?

Excerpt

“The skulls of plesiosaurs have a fairly noticeable feature in the top directly behind the eye socket or orbit. This feature is on the upper part of the skull and is either a depression or a hole and it extends over the width of the skull. The feature is called the supratemporal fenestra, meaning upper, temporal fenestre; temporal related to temples and fenestra from the Latin meaning window.

The question for those artists depicting the plesiosaurus skull is; how specifically will they draw the skull over the supratemporal fenestra–will the feature disappear in their drawing, covered in flesh in a way that renders the feature non-apparent or, will they draw the skull with an obvious depression or other feature that makes this “skull window” noticeable?”

Cave Art Sites in Europe:
“Pergouset is an extreme case, for there one also sees an amoeba-like creature with a vaguely human outline, a hind with an exceptionally long neck, and a rather equine animal head mounted on a giraffe neck. This theme of the animal with immoderately long neck is also found at Labastide, Altxerri and Le Gabillou. It also appears at Le Gabillou in the guise of a quadruped with a body and a head which defies indentification. Neither is it reasonable to try to identify the Lascaux ”unicorn” or the Pech-Merle “antelopes”. The Dawn of European Art By André Leroi-Gourhan

Palin-tology

I’ve learned from bitter experience that the question; “are you really as stupid as you look?” is best not answered with a simple yes or no. Along with yes or no, some explanatory oratory is probably best. On the other hand, a Christian should be expected to answer the question as to his/her belief that man and dinosaur lived together within the last 10,000 years with a simple and definitive, “yes!”

Even though the majority of Americans (for instance) believe that God was involved in creation and reject evolution to a greater or lesser extent, the idea that man and dinosaur lived together is more and more considered to be a foolish and backward. An idea suitable only to be laughed at.

Governor Palin, was no doubt more than a little naive when she suggested that non-existent over flights by Putin (and his ugly head) over Alaska constituted foreign policy experience but she was correct about the dinosaurs. Nonetheless, many media sources were derisive in reporting that she believed man and dinosaur interacted; as if everyone reading their stories would share their point of view.

Sadly, many Christians would have trouble answering the dinosaur and man question with a simple yes. For many, there would need to be some “hem and hawing” and for some, there would be a quick and maybe even emphatic denial.

The truth is, however there is overwhelming evidence that man and dinosaur did exist together. Ancient cultures left voluminous evidence in the form of art, and literature for example, that they interacted with creatures that we now call dinosaurs. That evidence is largely ignored, suppressed, hidden or misunderstood. However, everyone is aware that ancient cultures shared an experience with creatures they called “dragons” that it is clear, they regarded as real creatures.

These dragons were in virtually every respect; when taken together with pterosaurs, exactly like dinosaurs that science claims became extinct millions of years before man evolved. Why don’t evolutionists have to spend every waking moment trying to convince us that there is no connection between the dragons of antiquity with dinosaurs? Because despite the almost organic resistance society has to evolution, we have nevertheless accepted the notion that the universe is billions of years old.

Materialism and its associated religious doctrines are crumbling under the weight of true science however. It is evolutionists and materialists that should be feeling defensive about their beliefs. Francis Collins, who headed the successful human genome project is now a “believer” who was recently selected by President Obama to head the National Institute of Health said the following about DNA; (paraphrased) “if everyone on earth started reading a portion of the information contained in a single cell of DNA it would take 31 years to read it all”.

That is the amount of information in a single cell and each of us has trillions of such cells in our body. Who put this coded information in the cells of everything living? By the way, Atheists and liberals are opposing Collins because he believes God coded this information into the cells of living things.

As for the universe itself, it has become so clearly created for life that physicists are seriously proposing and Alice in Wonderland notion, known as string theory, that postulates an infinite number of invisible and undetectable universes and hypothesizes further that we just happen to live in the one tailored for life. Why not propose that the universe is carried upon the back of a giant tortoise—or has that already been suggested?

As for the big bang, up to 96% of the universe is described as being made up of “dark” matter and energy. They are like those invisible and undetectable universes of string theory and they must be assumed to exist or else the whole big bang theory would collapse. Those who believe and preach these science doctrines are the ones who are deriding Governor Palin and “fundamentalists” for believing what the Bible teaches.

As we shall see, there is evidence out there in the world beyond Sarah Palin’s back porch to suggest that she does read and that man and dinosaur did co-exist.

Dragons Liar

When paleontologist Mary Schweitzer claimed to have found collagen protein and connective tissue in the thigh bone of a t-rex in 2007 and in a fossilized duck-billed dinosaur in 2009 she received a lot of grief and resistance from the scientific community. This is because; no one could accept that protein could still be obtained from a creature that allegedly died more than 65 million years ago.

Imagine if you will, trying to run for public office only to have the media discover that you harbored such ridiculous beliefs. That would be really stup….Wait; one second….I’m being told that there are plenty of people out there willing to believe it. Let’s move on.

The sauropod dinosaur is iconic. It was the largest land creature ever and has a very long neck, a long tail and a somewhat bulky quadruped body in the middle. Because it is iconic, it can be represented in detail or with a few simple lines. It is easy to recognize.

If man and dinosaur co-existed, it should be somewhere represented in the arts of man. They would have been too big to ignore. As a matter of fact, a total absence of its description or depiction would be a serious problem for creationists. As it turns out however, that problem doesn’t exist.

Just as the internet disposed of the notion that Egyptians looked like Charleston Heston or Edward G. Robinson (N.Y. accent: where’s your God nahowwww, Moses, huhhhhh?), it will give people a chance to see and to investigate for themselves some of the evidence of man and dinosaur co-existence scattered about in museums and art galleries around the world.

The idea that such evidence doesn’t exist because man and dinosaur never saw each other is frankly, a lie. All evidence to the contrary is suppressed, labeled as hoaxes, as fakes or simply ignored. The question is, how and why did ancient man conceive of mythological creatures almost exactly like dinosaurs…large, reptilian quadrupeds. When it comes to sauropods specifically, how to explain long necked, long tailed quadrupeds of the iconic sauropod shape among cultures that supposedly missed the creatures by 45 million years or so?

What if there are features of ancient, iconic sauropod depictions which have only recently been discovered by modern science? How will science explain that? I’m guessing something invisible and undetectable ;0).

If what science tells us about man and dinosaur is correct, and they missed each other by millions of years, how and why did ancient man create images of the easily recognizable sauropod dinosaur, (among others,) often complete with the correct sauropod anatomical features and body shape, the correct skull/head shape and even a correct depiction of sauropod skin – which has only recently been discovered?

An ancient Chinese sauropod depiction features a long necked sauropod-like “dragon” eating a flower. Sauropods were vegetarians, but how did the ancients know?

A recent find, a Turkish ewer has a spout that is the spitting image of a brachiosaurs. Putting our little sauropod collection together in this little booklet, we believe helps us see how prevalent these depictions were in ancient art.

by Jorge Gasco de El Oráculo de Occidente Source: And Spanish Version of this Article Here

I want to thank my friend Jorge Gasco of El Oraculo de Occidente, for sending me the link to and for giving me permission to publish a version of his article concerning the topics listed in the title. While we here at s8int.com are largely chair bound, Jorge and his friends made like Indiana Jones and conducted some exciting archaeological work on their own.

This story as the title suggests combines a little bit of giant humans along with dinosaurs and mysterious ancient civilizations. It’s mostly told in photographs.

On a number of occasions I’ve been asked about giant humans vis a vis evolution and the Bible. I’ve said that evolution really doesn’t deal with giant “modern” humans but occassionally someone will offer that evolutionists do accept for instance Gigantopithecus (known by giant teeth, some say human, some think great ape)–which we also cover on this site.

Gigantopithecus aside evolution does not adequately explain why sometime in the past, humans, dogs, cats, cows, horses and dinsosaurs were of gigantic size. Certainly not if uniformism is also assumed with respect to the history of the earth.

But Jorge’s article puts the question to the fore once again; when could men have left a shoeprint–in granite (or at least in rock) corresponding to a man of a height of 13 feet!? If they were bare footprints, one could argue that they were from a great ape, though none of them should have been around when this rock was formed–or one could have argued that they were smudged dinosaur prints.

But they are shoeprints, of gigantic size, mixed in with the prints of three-toed dinosaurs. Did 13 foot men live millions of years ago–possibly more than a billion years ago? These findings only make sense if some or all of the following are true; 1)granite takes much less time to form than science says it does–in thousands of years not millions; dinosaurs and men lived at the same time; that there were giants in those days–before the flood–only a few thousand years ago….s8int.com

Some years ago, in 2004 to be exact, I went for the first time to visit a well-known place within the Valencian archaeological tourist circuit. It is the route of an aqueduct through almost 30 kilometers which meanders through various localities: Tuejar, Chelva, Streets, Domeño and Losa of the Bishop, all in the region of the Highlands, in the Province of Valencia.

It is made up of aqueducts (typically high arched), drains, and galleries cut into the rock of the mountains. Traditionally its construction is attributed to the Romans, but there are no actual facts or evidence to substantiate such claims.

The ancient texts mentions only that the construction pre-dates 1797, –that from the pen of insigne Antonio Josef Cabanilles, in his work “Observations on Natural History, Geography, Agriculture, Population and Fruits of the Kingdom of Valencia”.

After studying and writing on the subject I knew that there were previous references than Cabanilles’ about seeing everything pertaining to the region of the Highlands, province of Valencia.

Photo:The Remains of the Aqueduct

I’m not saying that the attribution of the construction of the works there to the Romans has no foundation in truth, just that there is nothing in the ancient texts to substantiate the claim.

One ancient source assumes the construction took place in the first century, a time of Roman domination but this attribution is also devoid of any actual evidence to support it, and thus it is mere speculation which follows the political line.

In the political line, it serves only to give all credit to the Romans, holding any notion that a prior civilization, higher in technology was responsible to be non-credible. It is as if in forgetting what we once were, we get rid once and for all of that cultural infection, tyrannical and alien of which the present system is built upon that frightens us.

The remaining story is told in the Captions to the photos:

Shang Dynasty, Jade Piece is a Lambeosaurine Dinosaur?

Crypto, Dinosaurs in Literature, s8int.com, Science, Unexplained Artifact | Posted by Chris Parker
Mar 06 2009

This objet d’art is posted for sale on the internet. The text at the bottom of this post is a verbatim quote from the site. It is the opinion of the sellers of this ancient Shang Dynasty object that it is a representation of a dinosaur. There suggestion was tyrannosaur but we think that it very closely matches the lambeosaurine dinosaurs.(This piece now is in the Genesis Park Collection)

Charonosaurus, saurolophus and parasaurolophus were three very large lambeosaurine dinosaurs which are virtually indistinquishable from each other, at least as interpreted by artists and scientists today. All three of them had backwards pointing crests similar to the crest/horn depicted by the Chinese artist of the Shang Dynasty between 1766 BC and 1122 BC.

Here we compare the ancient Chinese piece with several depictions of lambeosaurine dinosaurs selected to most closely resemble the posture and position of the jade, Shang Dynasty piece. It will be noted that the smaller front legs aren’t depicted on the piece due to what we assume is “artistic license”. Even so, we maintain that it is fairly easy to identify the piece.

Photo:parasaurolophus, left. Shang Dynasty piece, middle, parasaurolophus right.

The similarity between this ancient piece and modern depictions of these tree hadrosaurine dinosaurs is too close to be a coincidence; the dermal crest, the backwards pointing crest and the ability to walk bipedally on two large, powerful legs.

This “dinosaur” features scaled skin and a long tail that helped the bipedal dinosaurs balance themselves. It appears as though these lambesaurine dinosaurs, which lived on the North American continent as well as in Asia continued to live at least between 3,700 and 3,100 years ago.

“Charonosaurus is a very large lambeosaurine hadrosaur (estimated around 10.8 m (36 ft) long), known from a partial skull (Holotype: CUST J-V1251-57 (Changchun University of Sciences and Technology, Changchun, Jilin Province, China)) found in the Late Maastrichtian Yuliangze Formation, west of Jiayin village, Heilongjiang Province, northeastern China.

Adult and juvenile hadrosaur remains discovered in the same area and formation likely represent the same taxon and supply information on most of the postcranial skeleton; the femur length was up to 1.35 m. (4.5 ft).

Charonosaurus is one of the largest hadrosaurs currently known from Asia and indicates that lambeosaurines survived till the very end of the Cretaceous (lambeosaurines are not known from the Late Maastrichtian in North America)”…..wikipedia.org

Saurolophus is a genus of large hadrosaurine duckbill that lived about 70 million years ago, in the Late Cretaceous of North America (Canada) and Asia (Mongolia); it is one of the few genera of dinosaurs known from multiple continents.

It is distinguished by a spike-like crest which projects up and back from the skull. Saurolophus was a herbivorous dinosaur which could move about either bipedally or quadrupedally.

The type species, S. osborni, was described by Barnum Brown in 1912. The other valid species, S. angustirostris, lived in Asia, and was described by Anatoly Konstantinovich Rozhdestvensky. A third species is considered dubious.

Photo:saurolophus, left. Shang Dynasty piece, right.

Parasaurolophus, left, Shang Dynasty piece, middle and parasaurolophus right. As a hadrosaurid, Saurolophus would have been a bipedal/quadrupedal herbivore, eating a variety of plants. Its skull permitted a grinding motion analogous to chewing, and its teeth were continually replacing and packed into dental batteries that contained hundreds of teeth, only a relative handful of which were in use at any time.

Plant material would have been cropped by its broad beak, and held in the jaws by a cheek-like organ. Its feeding range would have extended from the ground to ~4 meter (13 ft) above. Common S. angustirostris would have been an important large herbivore in the Nemegt Formation, but S. osborni was rare in the Horseshoe Canyon Formation and faced competition from other duckbills (Edmontosaurus and Hypacrosaurus).

Crest

The distinctive spike-like crest of Saurolophus has been interpreted in multiple ways, and could have had multiple functions. Brown compared it to the crest of a chameleon, and suggested it could provide an area for muscle attachment and a connection point for a nonbody back frill like that seen in the basilisk lizard. Peter Dodson interpreted similar features in other duckbills as having use in sexual identification.

Maryaska and Osmska, noting the hollow base, suggested that the crest increased the surface area of the respiratory cavity, and helped in thermoregulation. James Hopson supported a function as a visual signal, and further mentioned the possibility that there were inflatable skin flaps over the nostrils that could have acted as resonators and additional visual signals.”…..Wikipedia

Some believe the mythical Chinese dragon may be the dinosaur in the Gretaceous Period. The Chinese character of Dragon has been formed by the pattern derivation which must base some thing in the real world.

If this is true, then the ancient Chinese must see the live dinosaur to compose the dragon character.

The shape of ancient character of dragon looks like the shape of dinosaur. Tyrannosaurus is the major dinosaur family of the Gretaceous period. Tyrannosaurus was one of the largest terrestrial carnivores of all time. It stood approximately 15 feet high and was about 40 feet in length, roughly six tons in weight.

In its large mouth were six-inch long, sharp, serrated teeth. The artifact has the simplified design of tyrannosaurus with only two legs.

The typical relief auspicious cloud lines in the Shang dynasty. It is made of white color nephrite with phenomena of differential weathering, cleaving veins and earth penetration.

Man Eaten by Dinosaur?
11/2/1877
Galveston News
From the Carthage (Mo.) Patriot.

Evolutionists often ask why if men and dinosaurs interacted, no evidence of their fossil remains having been found together exists. One of the aims of several sections of this website has been to show that such evidence exists in quantity, but that it has been lost, suppressed or ignored.

Any scientist who today announced for example that he had found evidence that a dinosaur bone showed evidence of having been butchered by man would not make a name for himself but would rather, end his scientific career.

Evidence supported by science has been discovered numerous times (such as the Doheny Expedition) and according to an article in the Galveston news, reprinted from the Carthage Patriot, another such an impossible interaction was discovered;

“Mr. Henry “Woodard owns a stock rancho in the Indian Territory, in the Peoria Nation, on which is situated the big sulfur spring. The spring is surrounded by a quagmire, which is very deep and ” slushy,” and so soft that it will not bear any considerable weight.

Mr. W. lately undertook to curb up the spring in order to get water more easily, and while working in the mire came upon what appeared to be an enormous bone. He at once began an examination which disclosed the fact that it was the head of some mammoth beast.

His curiosity was aroused, and, with the assistance of three other men, he began the work of excavation. For four days they worked, but did not succeed in bringing the monster to the surface. They threw off the marl, but could not lift the head of this golitic giant.

They found the skeleton well preserved, and the immense teeth still sat in the jaws. The jaws were both in place and the spinal column attached to the cranium. Tho earth was thrown off from the body to the length of twenty feet, but still the gigantic skeleton remained beneath”.

The men finally managed to dislodge a number of the creature’s ribs which according to the report, were eight feet in length. When the dirt was removed which was encircled by the ribs and bones, Mr. Woodard and the men with him got an even bigger surprise according to the article.

THE just reward of him that is accustomed to lie, is not, to be believed when he speaketh the truth : so just an occasion may sometimes be imposed upon the pamphleting pressers; and therefore, if we receive the same reward, we cannot much blame our accusers, which often falls out either by our forward credulity to but-seeming true reports, or by false copies translated from other languages, which (though we beget not) we foster, and our shame is little the less.

But, passing by what’s past, let not our present truth blush for any former falsehood sake : the country is near us, Sussex; the time present, August; the subject, a Serpent ; strange, yet now a neighbour to us ; and it were more than impudence to forge a lie so near home, that every man might turn in our throats ; believe it, or read it not, or read it (doubting) for I believe ere thou hast read this
little all, thou wilt not doubt of one, but believe there are many serpents in England.

Farewell.

A DISCOURSE

A STRANGE AND MONSTROUS
SERPENT OR DRAGON.

IN Sussex, there is a pretty market-town called Horsham, near unto it a forest, called St. Leonards forest, and there, in a vast and unfrequented place, heathy, vaulty, full of unwholesome shades, and overgrown hollows, where this serpent is thought to be bred ; but, wheresoever bred, certain and too true it is that there it yet lives.

Within three or four miles compass are its usual haunts, oftentimes at a place called Faygate, and it hath been seen within half a mile of Horsham, a wonder, no doubt, most terrible and noisome to the inhabitants thereabouts. There is always in his track or path left a glutinous and slimy matter (as by a small similitude we may perceive in a snail’s) which is very corrupt and offensive to the scent, insomuch that they perceive the air to be putrified withal, which must needs be very dangerous.

For though the corruption of it cannot strike the outward part of a man, unless heated into his blood, yet by receiving it in at any of our breathing organs (the mouth or nose) it is by authority of all authors, writing in that kind, mortal and deadly, as one thus saith : Noxia serpentum est admixto sanguine pestis.

The serpent, or dragon, as some call it, is reputed to be nine feet, or rather more, in length, and shaped almost in the form of an axletree of a cart, a quantity of thickness in the midst, and somewhat smaller at both ends. The former part, which he shoots forth as a neck, is supposed to be an ell long, with a white ring, as it were, of scales about it.

The scales along his back seem to be blackish, and so much as is discovered under his belly appeareth to be red ; for I speak of no nearer description than of a reasonable occular distance.

For coming too near it hath already been too dearly paid for, as you shall hear hereafter. It is likewise discovered to have large feet, but the eye may be there deceived ; for some suppose that serpents have no feet, but glide upon certain ribs and scales, which both defend them from the upper part of their throat unto the lower part of their belly, and also cause them to move much the faster.

For so this doth, and rids way, as we call it as fast as a man can run. He is of countenance very proud, and, at the sight or hearing of men or cattle, will raise his neck upright, and seem to listen and look about, with arrogancy. There are likewise on either side of him discovered two great bunches so big as a large foot-ball, and, as some think, will in time grow to wings ; but God, I hope, will defend the poor people in the neighbourhood, that he shall be destroyed before he grow so fledged.

He will cast his venom about four rod from him, as by woeful experience it was proved on the bodies of a man and woman coming that way, who afterwards were found dead, being poisoned and very much swelled, but not preyed upon.

Likewise a man going to chase it and, as he imagined, to destroy it, with two mastiff dogs, as yet not knowing the great danger of it, his dogs were both killed, and he himself glad to return with haste to preserve his own life. Yet this is to be noted, that the dogs were not preyed upon, but slain and left whole ; for his food is thought to be, for the most part, in a cony- warren, (rabbit warren) which he much frequents, and it is found much scanted and impaired in the increase it had wont to afford.

These persons, whose names are hereunder printed, have seen this serpent, beside divers others, as the carrier of Horsham, who lieth at the White Horse, in South wark, and who can certify the truth of all that has been here related.

Roman Era Lamp Found In England; Bird or Diplodocus?

Animation:Views of diplodocus and Roman era lamp.

From; Victoria County History of Kent Vol. 3 1932 – Romano-British Kent – Country Houses -. This bronze, Roman era lamp is from the time period of first century through the fifth century A.D.

There are no doubt some who would assume that this is a depiction of some long necked, featherless bird but an alternate interpretation is that of one of the long necked sauropods. Based on the skull shape, we have compared it to diplodocus. Everyone else can decide for themselves, but if you can can certainly rule out; swans, emus and ostriches, IOHO.

Clearly for us, the idea that the Romans could have depicted a living sauropod on one of their lamps as not so far fetched.

One of the early clues that we here at s8int.com had that our search for ancient depictions of dinosaurs would be successful was the discovery of the Roman Mosaic at Palestrina, which depicts several dinosaurs and other animals which were supposed to be extinct millions of years ago.

Ancient Roman oil lamps were small devices, typically made of terra cotta, that were used by the ancient Romans for artificial light. They were fueled by olive oil, and had anywhere from one to a dozen wicks. Many had handles so they could be carried from room to room, and also so they could by carried by actors in plays or by participants in various ritual activities.

Ancient Roman Oil Lamps

“Ancient Roman oil lamps often contained molded reliefs of erotic scenes, gladiators, mythical characters, or floral patterns. These lamps were fairly popular, since they could be released as collectible sets (e.g. a set of lamps with a different god on each lamp), and because they were relatively inexpensive.

Such lamps were mass-produced in great numbers, using molds instead of hand-crafting techniques. As a result they were easy, quick and cheap to manufacture. Many thousands of complete examples survive in museums across the world.” Wikipedia

In our experience many of these lamps were zoomorphic and were formed in the shape of real animals like horses, camels, dogs and birds but also in forms that we would find exotic such as griffins, and dinosaurs?
