INTEREST in wizards will hit fever pitch when the final Harry Potter book is released on Saturday but parents may be shocked by just how closely the stories draw on paganism.

Hundreds, if not thousands, of fans will immerse themselves in テ「竄ャナ努izard classesテ「竄ャツ held by bookstores around the city this week. Interest has also been boosted by the hugely popular fifth film in the series.

When Harry Potter And The Order Of The Phoenix opened in Australian cinemas on Thursday, it became the most successful Harry Potter film yet. The film grossed nearly $4.1million in box office takings on its opening day. In its first three days it earned $10.55million in Australia.

It was the fifth biggest opening day in Australian cinema history, behind The Lord Of The Rings trilogy and The Matrix Reloaded.Certain elements in the books and movies ring true for members of the Wicca community who practise magic, says the president of the Pagan Awareness Network, David Garland.

Spells used by the characters reflect real-life rituals. テ「竄ャナ典hey quote Hermione テ「竄ャ窶 sheテ「竄ャ邃「s the brainy one テ「竄ャ窶 talking about herbs and their properties,テ「竄ャツ Mr Garland said.

テ「竄ャナ展hat she says is correct. The characters use a wand and so do some of us, but theyテ「竄ャ邃「re not as powerful or impressive as they are in the book.テ「竄ャツ

Wands and swords, known as athame, were used to direct energy as テ「竄ャナ殿n extension of the willテ「竄ャツ.

テ「竄ャナ的 put my cape on maybe once or twice a year,テ「竄ャツ Mr Garland said. テ「竄ャナ撤eople do wear robes and thatテ「竄ャ邃「s the common aspect of what we do.テ「竄ャツ

Mr Garland said many pagans in Australia were Harry Potter fans, though he had read only one book and seen the first movie. He doubted the interest in Harry Potter would attract more people to the religion because readers were too young.

テ「竄ャナ徹ur religion isnテ「竄ャ邃「t for children. No reputable coven would take anyone under the age of 18.

If youテ「竄ャ邃「re looking for movies with a lot of truth in them, The Craft is one of them. テ「竄ャナ典hat movie caused us more grief than anything else because there was so much truth in that mixed with Hollywood crap. It brought a whole lot of 12-year-old girls to paganism. When they realised how much work was involved in witchcraft, they soon gave up.

But Harry Potter, no. There isnテ「竄ャ邃「t much interest in our community from that.テ「竄ャツ

The latest census figures about the number of pagans have not been collated, but Mr Garland estimated there were between 20,000 and 50,000 in Australia. In 2006 paganism grew by 400 per cent, which Mr Garland attributed largely to a repeal of anti-witchcraft laws in Victoria in 2005.

テ「竄ャナ迭eal pagans are like the guy next door or the person who sits at the desk next to you,テ「竄ャツ he told The Sun-Herald.

テ「竄ャナ典here are members of your staff who are practising witches and theyテ「竄ャ邃「re practising every day テ「竄ャツヲ There are university lecturers, doctors and lawyers.テ「竄ャツ

Best-selling book and DVD, The Secret, by Australian author Rhonda Byrne, was also based on Paganism, Mr Garland said. テ「竄ャナ典he Secret テ「竄ャ窶 to use a J.K. Rowling term テ「竄ャ窶 is magic for muggles,テ「竄ャツ he said.
