So, because you are lukewarm—neither hot nor cold—I am about to spit you out of my mouth.

by Charlie Liebert

Many Christians want to reconcile evolution and the Bible by believing in Theistic Evolution. Here is a letter to the editor of the Greensboro News and Record and my response. I’ve also add some additional material after the letter;

Creationism doesn’t conflict with evolution. “I wonder is someone could explain to me the conflict between creationism and evolution. The first tells us Who created everything that exists, while the second tells us how He choose to do it. Where is the conflict?” Jim Reid, Thomasville, NC.

To The Editor, Greensboro News and Record, Greensboro, NC

Creationism does conflict with evolution. In Jim Reid’s letter he asked; “…if someone could explain to me the conflict between creationism and evolution.”

Well, Jim here’s the explanation.

The process of evolution REQUIRES reproduction, pain, struggle and death. This cycle of birth and death is essential to make the process work. If evolution is true then death is a positive factor in producing the world as we see it today. Natural selection, which is a real process in nature and causes changes in living organisms but does not produce any new genetic material, requires struggle and death to work. So for evolution, reproduction and death are essential and are driving forces in making it happen.

In the creationist model God makes a PERFECT world without pain, suffering and death but as a result of Adam’s sin death enters God’s creation. Death is an intruder and is NOT what God intended.

For those that believe the Bible and have received the gift of God’s salvation death was defeated at the cross of Jesus Christ. There Jim, is the difference; death is good if evolution is true and death is bad if creation is true.

You can’t have it both ways either we evolved from pond scum millions of years ago through a process of reproduction, pain, struggle and death or God made us and death is here because we are sons of Adam. When Jesus returns death will be thrown into the lake of fire and it will disappear FOREVER. No more pain suffering and death. If evolution is true then death is here to stay and no one can escape it’s grasp. If evolution is true it’s hopeless! It’s NOT hopeless because creation is true and redemption from death through Jesus Christ is available to whoever will choose it. Jim, choose life not death. [end]

I believe in “recent creation” (God made the Universe in six days about 6,000 years ago) and here are two reasons Biblical reasons why I take the “young Earth” position. I do NOT take it because of science, since science is an interpretation of evidence and can change. I believe science does, in fact, verify the young Earth but we’ll not discuss that here, but here are some links to explore that issue.http://www.sixdaycreation.com/oct2000.html

http://www.sixdaycreation.com/mar299.html

p>

Here are the reasons:

1) The Bible is clear that death was a direct result of Adam’s sin, yet all the “old Earth” positions have death in the creation long before Adam’s sin because they are trying to accommodate the long ages REQUIRED for evolution. They argue that the death that came by Adam was only spiritual death, however, you then have to explain how we can have a better place in the new Heaven and Earth than Adam had in Eden.

Remember in the new creation (I believe it is a restored Eden); “the lion will lie down with the lamb” animals will be herbivores… That could not happen in the worlds they describe before Adam appeared. God would have used death and struggle as a POSITIVE process to gain improvement in all the old Earth scenarios. Death then would be a creative process used by God. That is NOT the God of Scripture!!!

2) At the end of each day God says his creative process is good and at the end of day six the scripture states; “Then God saw everything that He had made, and indeed it was very good. So the evening and the morning were the sixth day.” Genesis 1:31 (NKJV). EVERYTHING was VERY GOOD.

This expression implies a perfect Creation with no sin, death, rebellion… Most “old Earth” processes have the fall of Satan, death, sin, and all other kinds of imperfection present before the end of day six. That would imply that the clear statement of Scripture either wasn’t “everything that He had made” or it really wasn’t “very good”. This in direct conflict with the clear words of Scripture.

The reason I call the old Earth position heresy is because of these two clear violations of God’s word. These two conflicts are real and not just interpretation of the meaning of the words. Death before Adam’s sin and an imperfect Creation before the end of Day six are concrete violation of the nature and character of God as He revealed Himself in Scripture, which is the definition of heresy.

There are other indirect Biblical reasons, but they are not a compelling as these two. For example; why did God give us the genealogies in Genesis 5 and 11 and Luke and Matthew if dating weren’t important?

One closing comment. I don’t believe that any particular believers that hold these positions are not truly saved but I believe the beliefs themselves are heretical. All believers understanding of God is imperfect and I would implore them to be receptive to the teaching of God’s Word. Remember, I was first an atheistic evolutionist, then a theistic evolutionist, then I considered gap, day-age, long days, etc. and finally arrived at the “young Earth” position three years after my conversion and an extended study of both Scripture and science (perhaps a process of evolution in my life!!).

FOCUS MAGAZINE’S COELACANTH CONFESSIONS

By, Harun Yahya

Harun Yahya is a pen name used by Mr. Adnan Oktar.

An interesting article appeared in the April 2003 edition of Focus magazine. More than its actual content, the interesting thing about this article was its publication in Focus, a magazine known for its devotion to the theory of evolution, yet which still carried a report about the fish known as the coelacanth, “living proof” that totally undermines all the claims of the theory of evolution.

Even more interesting was the manner the magazine dealt with the subject. Focus had no compunctions about setting out, one by one and in the most open manner, all the blows dealt to the theory of evolution by the coelacanth. The “astonishment” awoken in evolutionists by this fish, and the way that it and other “living fossils” represent a complete dead-end for evolution were objectively described.

This article, which may be regarded as a “confession” from the point of view of emphasizing the invalidity of the theory of evolution, genuinely dealt with the subject in a most objective manner.

We hope that this attitude will continue, and we repeat the blows dealt to evolution by the coelacanth below.

The coelacanth is a large fish, some 150 cm long, covered in thick scales reminiscent of armor. It belongs to the Osteichthyes class, and the earliest fossils from it are found in strata from the Devonian Period (408-350 million years). Up until 1938, a great many evolutionist zoologists assumed that the coelacanth walked on the sea bed using its two pairs of double fins, and that it represented a transitional form between land and sea creatures.

As evidence for this they pointed to the bony structure of the fins in the coelacanth fossils to hand at the time. A development in 1938, however, totally overturned this intermediate species claim. A living coelacanth was caught in the waters off the Republic of South Africa!

Furthermore, study of this animal, believed to have disappeared at least 70 million years ago, revealed that coelacanths had undergone absolutely no changes at all for 400 million years. The astonishment caused by this discovery is expressed in Focus magazine in these terms:

“Even the discovery of a living dinosaur would have been less surprising. Because fossils show that the coelacanth existed 150-200 million years before the appearance of the dinosaurs.

The creature put forward by many scientists as the ancestor of land-dwelling vertebrates, believed to have disappeared at least 70 million years ago, had been found!”

In the years which followed, some 200 living Latimera chalumnae were caught. It was realized that these fish, which had undergone absolutely no changes, lived between 150 and 600 meters down and possessed a perfect bodily design.

In 1987, Professor Hans Fricke of the Max Planck Institute descended some 200 meters off the Comores Islands, to the east of Africa, in the mini-sub Geo, and observed these creatures in their natural habitat. He saw that their bony fins had no functional connection to the protrusions which allow tetrapods (four-footed land-dwelling animals) to walk. This is how Focus magazines reports the results of this research: “The flexible fins had no similar functions to those in four-footed land vertebrates. These allowed the creature to swim head-down and in all directions, even backwards.”

In order to better understand how a living thing which has experienced no changes for a 400 million-year period can make things so difficult for evolutionists it will be useful to have a look at some information from the fossil record. Just about all today’s known phyla (the largest category used in the classification of animals) emerged in the Cambrian Period. That refers to the period between 543 and 490 million years ago.

The beginning of the Cambrian period shows that the history of complex living things on earth, if we exclude single-celled and elementary multi-celled creatures, goes back some 550 million years. The period during which the coelacanth has remained unchanged therefore represents considerably more than two-thirds of that period.

If life on earth emerged by evolution, how is it that this creature was able to come down to the present day, over such a long period of time, without being affected by the mutations and natural selection which are claimed to lead to evolution? Evolutionists have no answer to this.

When one also considers the continental shifts that took place during these 400 million years when coelacanths remained totally unchanged, then evolutionists can be seen to be in a completely helpless position.

Focus magazine writes: “According to the scientific facts, all the continents were joined together some 250 million years ago. This enormous area of land was surrounded by a single giant ocean. Around 125 million years ago, the Indian Ocean opened up as the result of continents changing places. The volcanic caves in the Indian Ocean, which form a large part of the coelacanth’s natural habitat, came about under the influence of this movement of continents. An important truth emerges in the light of all these facts. These animals, which have been in existence for some 400 million years, have remained unchanged despite the many changes in their natural environment!”

Anasazi Prayer Stick Pteranodon?

At the Manitou Cliff Dwellers Museum in Manitou Springs, Colorado, exists an Anasazi artifact on display that has raised more questions than anything else ever discovered in the area.

The word “Anasazi” (ah-nuh-SAH-zee) is used to describe a distinctive American Indian civilization and culture that existed from about 1200 B.C. to A.D. 1300 in the Four Corners Area of Southwestern United States.

These people are probably best known for the ruins of their monumental cliff dwellings at places like Mesa Verde, which they abandoned at the end of the 13th century.

He mysterious object in question is an Indian “prayer stick”, roughly a foot long, with a crested head, eyes on both sides, and a mouth.

When looked upon by anyone acquainted with “prehistoric reptiles,” whether it be the common 4-year old to the respected paleontologist, its identity simply cannot, and will not, be ignored.

The artistically and well-defined head of a Pteranodon stands atop the stick, raising many questions of how they molded the head of a species long extinct, and why they did so.

Many legends exist of large “reptilian birds” in the area, and this, as of now, appears to be the only realistic answer…Sources:TrueAuthority.com…Monitou CliifDwellermseum.com

A rare video filmed by a tourist at the lake in the Heavenly Mountains of the wild Xinjiang region, has reignited debate over the existence of an underwater creature that can compete with the Loch Ness monster in both mass and mystery.

The grainy film shows about 15 objects moving at high speed just beneath the surface of the lake and whipping the smooth blue water into a bubbling white frenzy. Chinese Central Television broadcast the video on its news channel, describing the footage shot by a passing tourist on July 5 as the clearest ever seen of a legendary beast that has been rumoured for centuries to live in the depths of Lake Kanasi.

Local myth among the Chinese Mongolians living in the scenic mountains near the Russian and Mongolian borders has it that the animals have been known to drag sheep, cows and even horses from the shore and into the deep to devour them.

Yuan Guoying, of the Xinjiang Institute of Environmental Protection, told The Times that the video provided important proof in his more than two decades of research at the lake. “Only fish could make waves in this formation. I think the video is real.”

The television commentator described the sighting as the first since June 7, 2005 when two black creatures measuring more than 10 metres in length appeared on the surface swimming at speed from the shore to the centre of the lake. The newsreader described the latest appearance: “They sometimes gathered in a flock, sometimes spread about or moved shoulder to shoulder. The scene is grand and they looked like a fleet.”

State television made no attempt to identify the animals, saying only: ‘This time a large number of unidentified creatures emerged, bringing more mystery to Lake Kanasi.”

Professor Yuan has been on their trail since 1980 and has been gripped by the mystery since his first sighting in 1985 when he says he saw as many as 50 of what he called fish. “They looked like reddish-brown tadpoles because I could only see their heads on the surface. They opened their mouths to breathe and their length was about 10 to 15 metres.”

He spotted the animals again on May 28, 2004 when he was standing looking down at the lake from a nearby hill. “I thought there was a huge piece of black plastic in the lake and that someone had been polluting it. But then I released that it must be the back of a giant fish. I was shocked because they were just too big. Looking at them was like looking at submarines.”

When Mr Yuan got back to his office he tried to calculate the size of the animals by setting their proportions against those of the surrounding landmarks such as trees or the shape of the shoreline. “I didn’t dare say they were bigger than 20 metres because no one would believe me.”

Chinese researchers in the 1980s said the ‘monster’ was likely to be a huge member of the salmon family – one of eight species of fish living in the lake. Mr Yuan gave their name as Hucho Taimen, a freshwater salmon tht thrives in deep frigid waters. He says the biggest Hucho Taimen salmon ever captured was 2.1 metres long and was found in Russia.

The animals that roam Lake Kanasi live in an area about 24 kilometres by two kilometers and with an average depth of 122 metres and as deep as 188 metres at one point.

Mr Yuan believes that a lot more research is needed although China lacks the scientific equipment to make further studies. And it would be impossible to catch a fish of this size. “This fish will have tremendous strength.”

Other Chinese scientists have cast doubt on his findings, but Mr Yuan is adamant. “People will just say ‘You’ve got to be kidding’. But I saw them with my own eyes. I am a scientist. I have no choice but to believe what I saw.”

Megaflood ‘Made Island Britain’

The megaflood made Britain what it is today, geographically

Britain became separated from mainland Europe after a catastrophic flood some time before 200,000 years ago, a sonar study of the English Channel confirms.

The images reveal deep scars on the Channel bed that must have been cut by a sudden, massive discharge of water.

Scientists tell the journal Nature that the torrent probably came from a giant lake in what is now the North Sea.

Some event – perhaps an earthquake – caused the lake’s rim to breach at the Dover Strait, they believe.

Paganism in Recent Media Offerings

Going potty (into detail) about Paganism

Caroline Marcus | July 15, 2007   Brisbane Times

INTEREST in wizards will hit fever pitch when the final Harry Potter book is released on Saturday but parents may be shocked by just how closely the stories draw on paganism.

Hundreds, if not thousands, of fans will immerse themselves in “wizard classes” held by bookstores around the city this week. Interest has also been boosted by the hugely popular fifth film in the series.

When Harry Potter And The Order Of The Phoenix opened in Australian cinemas on Thursday, it became the most successful Harry Potter film yet. The film grossed nearly $4.1million in box office takings on its opening day. In its first three days it earned $10.55million in Australia.

It was the fifth biggest opening day in Australian cinema history, behind The Lord Of The Rings trilogy and The Matrix Reloaded.Certain elements in the books and movies ring true for members of the Wicca community who practise magic, says the president of the Pagan Awareness Network, David Garland.

Spells used by the characters reflect real-life rituals. “They quote Hermione – she’s the brainy one – talking about herbs and their properties,” Mr Garland said.

“What she says is correct. The characters use a wand and so do some of us, but they’re not as powerful or impressive as they are in the book.”

Wands and swords, known as athame, were used to direct energy as “an extension of the will”.

“I put my cape on maybe once or twice a year,” Mr Garland said. “People do wear robes and that’s the common aspect of what we do.”

Mr Garland said many pagans in Australia were Harry Potter fans, though he had read only one book and seen the first movie. He doubted the interest in Harry Potter would attract more people to the religion because readers were too young.

“Our religion isn’t for children. No reputable coven would take anyone under the age of 18.

If you’re looking for movies with a lot of truth in them, The Craft is one of them. “That movie caused us more grief than anything else because there was so much truth in that mixed with Hollywood crap. It brought a whole lot of 12-year-old girls to paganism. When they realised how much work was involved in witchcraft, they soon gave up.

But Harry Potter, no. There isn’t much interest in our community from that.”

The latest census figures about the number of pagans have not been collated, but Mr Garland estimated there were between 20,000 and 50,000 in Australia. In 2006 paganism grew by 400 per cent, which Mr Garland attributed largely to a repeal of anti-witchcraft laws in Victoria in 2005.

“Real pagans are like the guy next door or the person who sits at the desk next to you,” he told The Sun-Herald.

“There are members of your staff who are practising witches and they’re practising every day … There are university lecturers, doctors and lawyers.”

Best-selling book and DVD, The Secret, by Australian author Rhonda Byrne, was also based on Paganism, Mr Garland said. “The Secret – to use a J.K. Rowling term – is magic for muggles,” he said.

Elusive mystical creatures emerged again in Kanas Lake of China’s Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region. According to the administration of the Kanas scenic spot, on July 5th at 8:20pm, huge ripples were seen on the surface of the lake by a few tourists carrying their portable video cameras.

The 8-minute video recording captured the entire event. From the video there can been seen a group of unidentified creatures, about 15 in number.

They gather together and separate, looking like a fleet, and create a magnificent scene. The parts of creatures seen above the surface of the water are several times larger than the biggest sightseeing boat in the area.

Unique Cobra, “Dragon” Figurines Found in Bulgaria’s Perperikon

If science wasn’t so sure that dinosaurs and man missed each other by approximately 40 million years, they might have described one of these figurines as a dinosaur rather than a dragon. Of course, Christians believe that “dinosaurs” were created in the same week as man. Christians thus shouldn’t be surprised when evidence that dinosaurs and man co-existed. Sofia News Agency, July 10, 2007

Bulgarian archaeologists have found two unique ceramic figurines of a cobra and dragon heads as they continue excavation at the rock sanctuary of Perperikon, near Kardzhali in southern Bulgaria.

The two figurines were part of the ornaments of a clay altar dating roughly to the period between the 3rd and 1st centuries before Christ, said archaeologist Nikolai Ovcharov, who oversees the dig.

The finds are probably part of the Tsepina culture, named after one of the key Thracian fortresses in the Rodopi Mountains, which played an important strategic role well into the medieval era.

The two finds are more important than the Roman era finds because they offer much more insight into the distinctive traits of the local culture, Ovcharov said.

Snakes were considered guardians of the deeps and, as such, were closely associated to the cult of Dionysus, whose shrine the Bulgarian archaeologists are currently excavating.

The next stage of the dig, which is staffed by close to 150 people, is to examine the southern quarter of the city, where the archaeologists hope to remain the remains of a third palace, dating back to the Thracian era.

The city of Perperikon has been inhabited since around 5000 BC, while a nearby shrine dedicated to Orpheus, near the village of Tatul, dates back to 6000 BC and is older than the Pyramids of Giza.

Tablet Aids Old Testament’s Credibility

July 11, 2007

THE British Museum has hailed a discovery within a modest clay tablet in its collection as a breakthrough for biblical archaeology – dramatic proof of the accuracy of the Old Testament.

The cuneiform inscription in a tablet dating from 595BC has been deciphered for the first time – revealing a reference to an official at the court of Nebuchadnezzar, king of Babylon, that proves the historical existence of a figure mentioned in the Book of Jeremiah.

This is rare evidence in a non-biblical source of a real person, other than kings, featured in the Bible.

The tablet names a Babylonian officer called Nebo-Sarsekim, who according to Jeremiah xxxix was present in 587BC when Nebuchadnezzar “marched against Jerusalem with his whole army and laid siege to it”.

The cuneiform inscription records how Nebo-Sarsekim lavished a gift of gold on the Temple of Esangila in the fabled city of Babylon, where, at least in folk tradition, Nebuchadnezzar is credited with building the Hanging Gardens, one of the Seven Wonders of the World.

British Museum staff are excited by the discovery. Irving Finkel, assistant keeper in the Department of the Middle East, said: “A mundane commercial transaction takes its place as a primary witness to one of the turning points in Old Testament history. This is a tablet that deserves to be famous.”

The discovery was made by Michael Jursa, associate professor at the University of Vienna, on a routine research trip to the museum. “It’s very exciting and very surprising,” he said. “Finding something like this tablet, where we see a person mentioned in the Bible making an everyday payment to the temple in Babylon and quoting the exact date, is quite extraordinary.”

Since 1991, Dr Jursa has been visiting the museum to study a collection of more than 100,000 inscribed tablets – the world’s largest holdings. Although they are examined by international scholars daily, reading and piecing together fragments is painstaking work and more than half are yet to be published.

Cuneiform is the oldest known form of writing. During its 3,000-year history it was used to write about 15 languages including Babylonian, Assyrian, Hittite and Urartian. A wedged instrument – usually a cut reed – was used to press the signs into clay. This gave the writing system its name, “cuneiform”, or wedge-shaped.

There are only a small number of scholars worldwide who can read cuneiform script. One of them is Dr Jursa, who told The Times yesterday (Tuesday) that the British Museum tablet was so well preserved that it took him just a couple of minutes to decipher.

This one – which is 2.13 inches (5.5cm) wide – was acquired by the British Museum in 1920.

Dr Jursa said: “But no one realised the connection. They didn’t really read it.” It was unearthed from the ancient city of Sippar, where there was a huge sun temple, just over a mile from modern-day Baghdad. It was part of a large temple archive excavated for the British Museum in the 1870s.

Dr Jursa, who made the discovery while conducting research into officials at the Babylonian court, said that the tablet recorded Nebo-Sarsekim’s gift of gold to the temple – a gift so large that it would be comparable in value today to the cost of a large townhouse.

On hearing of the discovery yesterday (Tuesday), Geza Vermes, the eminent emeritus professor of Jewish studies at the University of Oxford, said that such a discovery revealed that “the Biblical story is not altogether invented”.

He added: “This will be interesting for religious people as much as historians.”
