Salvage prospect for ‘Junk’ DNA
By Paul Rincon

The genome may possess far more complexity than was imagined.

A mathematical analysis of the human genome suggests that so-called “junk DNA” might not be so useless after all. The term junk DNA refers to those portions of the genome which appear to have no specific purpose.

But a team from IBM has identified patterns, or “motifs”, that were found both in the junk areas of the genome and those which coded for proteins.

The presence of the motifs in junk DNA suggests these portions of the genome may have an important functional role.

The findings are reported in Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences journal. But they will have to be verified by experimenters in the lab, the scientists behind the work point out.

Dr Andrew McCallion, who was not an author on the new paper, commented: “Up until not so long ago, we were under the impression that the vast majority of information in the genome, if not all of it, was encoded in those stretches of DNA that encoded proteins.

“We now understand there is much more complexity involved,” Dr McCallion, from the McKusick-Nathans Institute of Genetic Medicine at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine in Baltimore, US, told the BBC News website.

Name the Mystery “Fish” at CryptoMundo

We’re naming it; Phil Lay.

Can you identify this mystery fish found on an old postcard?

The men in the picture look like military servicemen. The surroundings look like this photograph was taken on a beach or island. The fish appears to be about six feet long (notice the yard or meter stick lying next to it). But where are the fins on this cryptid (or even a tail)? What is it?

Added note: There is nothing on the back of this postcard, except it should be noted that the テ「竄ャナ撤lace Stamp Hereテ「竄ャツ box is formed by the letters AZO, which according to the comments below date this card.

All the AZO triangles are pointing upward, thus indicating a date for this postcard of 1904-18. It was contributed by a reader (Ms. Phyllis Mancz of Ohio) of Lorenテ「竄ャ邃「s Cryptozoo News blog at Cryptomundo.

Have You Ever Confused a Human Footprint With a Tool Mark? You Must be An Anthropologist

Evolutionist slap fight! A month or two ago, scientists reported human footprints which they estimated to be 40,000 years old (SIC) in Southern Mexico.

The problem is, that would be surprisingly ancient for “Modern Humans” in the Americas. It’s all inter-related.テつModern humans were supposed to only have evolved at such and such a time (the details are unimportant) which means that they could not have been here under the “land bridge theory until such and such a time….

Look, the point is, they were stepping on some toes with this date and by that we mean the toes of the ruling scientific paradigm. Since 40,000 years might be possible in evolutionary terms–but still unacceptable; paradigm scientists fought back by saying the marks are 1.3 million years old. Just like that, poof!

The possibility that they were human prints went away. The scientific faithful “know” that it would be “impossible” for them to be human at that age. (Most Christians and ourselves included do not accept any of these dates which were derived using circular logic and fair windage–and dice, we’re pretty sure)

Paradigm scientists also now claim that the footprints, which appear in left and right sequences–are actually just tool marks! So, at least one group of these evolutionists are a bit nutty.

On CSI they can tell so much with just a scintilla of evidence-but these guys don’t know tool marks from human foot prints! Hey, maybe you should give Gary Sinese –a call although we understand that the New York CSI is the worst one…..s8int.com

Cloud of scholarly dust rises over ancient footprints Claim

Tuesday, April 25, 2006 BRADLEY T. LEPPERテつAre the footprints of surprisingly ancient Americans preserved in 40,000-year-old volcanic ash in southern Mexico? In December, an article in the journal Science cast a cloud of doubt over that claim.テつ

The authors, Michael Waters and Paul Renne, argue that the ash dated to 1.3 million years ago, much too old for humans on this continent, and that the so-called footprints were nothing more than marks made by the tools of modern workers quarrying the stone with crowbars.

Now, Silvia Gonzalez, an archaeologist from Liverpool John Moores University, and several members of her research team have published their data and interpretations in the journal Quaternary Science Reviews. Based on their results, the case is far from closed.

According to the researchers, the early dates for the ash are wrong. They note that the overlying deposits range in age from 9,000 to 40,000 years, with no evidence of significant breaks in the sequence.

Moreover, an article in the March issue of the Mammoth Trumpet states that Gonzalez and her team have dated lake sediments below the ash layer to about 100,000 years ago, which would mean the ash had to be considerably younger than the date reported in Science.

Gonzalez and her co-authors also claim the “footprints” are distinct from recent tool markings, which are sharply defined and unweathered. Also, many of the footprints appear to preserve details of foot anatomy that would not be duplicated by quarry tool divots.

Finally, and most importantly, the team has identified more “potential footprints” in nearby locations “where no quarrying operations have occurred.”

Gonzalez told the Mammoth Trumpet that the only way to fully answer the critics would be “to excavate an area where there has been no quarry activity and uncover more footprints. We will do this as soon as we can.”

The most famous ancient footprints are the 3.6 million-year-old tracks of early human ancestors excavated by Mary Leakey at Laetoli in Tanzania, Africa.

In the current issue of the Journal of Human Evolution, Australian scientists announced the discovery of 23,000-year-old trackways of human footprints in western New South Wales.

1971 . Girifalco, a small village in the hills of Calabriaテつ halfway between Jonio and Tirreno,… an incredible uninterrupted rainstorm of more than 20 hours duration caused large landslides in the population center.

After the deluge, lawyer Mario Tolone Azzariti, on behalf of some land owners, was placed in charge of the inspections for estimating the extent of the flood damage.

In the course of these visits, inテつan area near Caria, where great landslides had taken place, and wide fractures in the land had been created, Tolone Azzariti recovered a anthropomorphic terracotta head which was engraved with indecipherable characters.

Tolone Azzariti, had developed a wide knowledge of classical cultures from years of study in the historical libraries and in the National archaeological Museum of Naples, but it had never seen objects of this character, not from the age of the Greeks, nor Phonecians or Roman….テつ

Extremely curious about the origins of the mysterious object, he increased theテつscope of his search to all the areas of the neighborhood; reading through other reports of the area, for if indeed this object was from an unknown civilization, there must be many other signs of its presence.

テつ ……And now we come to one of the most important piece of Toloneテ「竄ャ邃「s collection. One that will receive the closest scrutiny and interrogation by experts–and for which the collector has been quite emphatic of its authenticity,- a terracotta statue ofテつ approximately 18 cm of length representing one strange dinosaur/sauropod with plates on its back.テつ

Enigmatic Discovery

The discovery of a red granite head of a king with Nubian features in the precinct of Amenhotep IIIテ「竄ャ邃「s temple on Luxorテ「竄ャ邃「s West Bank has puzzled Egyptologists, writes Nevine El-Arefテつ

テ「竄ャナ典his really is a very surprising discovery,テ「竄ャツ Hourig Sourouzian, director of the German conservation project for the Colossi of Memnon and Amenhotep IIIテ「竄ャ邃「s temple, told Al-Ahram Weekly. She explained that since excavation of the site began in 1998 the mission had consistently stumbled upon homogenous New Kingdom statuaries until last week, when a well-preserved red granite royal head with Kushite featuresテ「竄ャ窶拉ull cheeks and bulging lipsテ「竄ャ窶掫as unearthed.

The 50-cm-tall head was found among several decaying granite block on a sandstone slab at the north end of the temple. Its top and right side were damaged, the nose was lightly chipped and the chin was broken. テ「竄ャナ的t is a very beautiful head wearing a nemes (regal headdress),テ「竄ャツ says Sourouzian, who asserts that it does not belong to the area where it lay buried.

テ「竄ャナ的f this head belongs to the Kushite period of the 25th dynasty, which is seven dynasties later than the reign of Amenhotep III, why is it deposited here?テ「竄ャツ Sourouzian asks. She says this leads one to suggest that it was deliberately moved from its original location and hidden for later retrieval. テ「竄ャナ的t may possibly have been deposited here at the beginning of the 19th century by the agent of the British Council, [Henry] Salt, who recovered and sent abroad several statues from this temple,テ「竄ャツ she says. テ「竄ャナ徹r maybe it is a much younger deposit, in the first half of the 20th century, when antiquities dealers made illegal diggings and deals in the Theban region before the inspectorate of the Antiquities Service was established on the West Bank.テ「竄ャツ

While digging trenches for a project to remove water from the western part of the temple precinct the team unearthed two 3,400-year-old statues of the lion-headed goddess Sekhmet. One is a black granite legless statue featuring the goddess of war standing and holding a papyrus in her hand. The other is a diorite bust of a colossal statue crowned with a diadem encircled by a uraeus headdress. The face of this statue is well preserved and only the back pillar is damaged. Both statues were brought immediately to the temporary site laboratory for primary cleaning and conservation.

テ「竄ャナ典hese are not the only Sekhmet statues found,テ「竄ャツ says Zahi Hawass, secretary-general of the SCA. Hawass says numerous Sekhmet statues have been found over the centuries at the Amenhotep III temple site, with the German mission unearthing 20 of them, but the latest one is the largest of all.

Next day while digging the southern part of the peristyle court of the temple, workers uncovered a red granite head of a colossal statue of Amenhotep III. It is a very well preserved head featuring the kingテ「竄ャ邃「s entire face but the crown and the beard are yet missing.

テ「竄ャナ鄭lthough a crack traverses its right side, the head is considered the most complete, well preserved and most beautiful portrait of king Amenhotep III,テ「竄ャツ said Sourouzian.

Other colossal heads had been previously discovered in Kom el Hettan by previous excavators, like the one in the Luxor Museum, but they are all partially damaged.

The head belongs to one of a series of colossal statues of the king, which surrounded the peristyle court of the great mortuary temple of Amenhotep III. They have all been destroyed over centuries, the last remains lie under the road which covers half of the southern portico of the court.

Ceratopsians were supposed to have died out millions of years ago, but from the number we have found in ancient art as shown on these pages, they were around much more recently than that.

Does this look like a ceratopsian dinosaur? We think so, but make up your own mind.

“Charles Lang Freer bought this sculpture in 1913 with complete confidence in the inscribed date of 1091.

A decade later, the Freer Gallery’s first director, John Ellerton Lodge, mused that the piece seemed “crude and not so early.”

In the 1960s the sculpture was reevaluated and the date of 1091 was confirmed by relating the sculpture to similar works in Chinese and foreign collections”. Smithsonian Freer Gallery..

More On Bosnia Pyramid: Researchers find first solid evidence of ancient pyramid under Bosnian hill

VISOKO, Bosnia-Herzegovina (AP)

Researchers in on Wednesday unearthed the first solid evidence that an ancient pyramid lies hidden beneath a massive hill a series of geometrically cut stone slabs that could form part of the structureテ「竄ャ邃「s sloping surface.

Archaeologists and other experts began digging into the sides of the mysterious hill near the central Bosnian town of Visoko last week. On Wednesday, the digging revealed large stone blocks on one side that the leader of the team believes are the outer layer of the pyramid.

テ「竄ャツ抖hese are the first uncovered walls of the pyramid,テ「竄ャツ said Semir Osmanagic, a Bosnian archaeologist who studied the pyramids of Osmanagic said Wednesdayテ「竄ャ邃「s discovery significantly bolsters his theory that the 650-meter (2,120-foot) hill rising above the small town of Visoko is actually a step pyramid the first found in .テ「竄ャツ抔e can see the surface is perfectly flat. This is the crucial material proof that we are talking pyramids,テ「竄ャツ he said.

Osmanagic believes the structure itself is a colossal 220 meters (722 feet) high, or a third taller than Egyptテ「竄ャ邃「s Great Pyramid of Giza.

The huge stone blocks discovered Wednesday appear to be cut in cubes and polished.

テ「竄ャナ的t is so obvious that the top of the blocks, the surface is man made,テ「竄ャツ Osmanagic said. He plans to continue the work throughout the summer, テ「竄ャナ殿fter which the pyramid will be visible,テ「竄ャツ he said.

Earlier research on the hill, known as Visocica, found that it has perfectly shaped, 45-degree slopes pointing toward the cardinal points, and a flat top. Under layers of dirt, workers discovered a paved entrance plateau, entrances to tunnels and large stone blocks.

Satellite photographs and thermal imaging revealed two other, smaller pyramid-shaped hills in the Visoko Valley.Last weekテ「竄ャ邃「s excavations began with a team of rescue workers from a nearby coal mine being sent into a tunnel believed to be part of an underground network connecting the three pyramid-shaped hills.

They were followed by archeologists, geologists and other experts who emerged from the tunnel later to declare that it was certainly man-made.

The work will continue for about six months at the site just outside Visoko, about 30 kilometers (20 miles) northwest of the capital, Sarajevo.

Two experts from Egypt are due to join the team in mid-May. テ「竄ャナ的t will be a very exciting archaeological spring and summer,テ「竄ャツ Osmanagic said.

New Info on the Cuba (underwater city) MEGA Site

Author R.J. Archer passed along some interesting new information on the Cuba underwater site. Apparently submerged lines have been discovered in various parts of the world which could have been roads. The new photos are actually by Satellite discoveries. A quote from his Blog:

“While the true nature of these linear patterns is not yet known, Satellite Discoveries has determined that the width of the lines is in the photos is consistent withテつthe width of roads! If they are roads, the underwater ruins known as MEGA may turn out to be just the tip of the iceberg (no pun intended) when it comes to Caribbean mysteries.

Unfortunately, the Cuban sites are inaccessible to most of us, but the Florida site is only 90 to 110 feet deep and accessible with SCUBA gear. Who’s going to be the first to know what’s out there?”

Your Darwin Quote on the Human Eye –and Reply

Church of Darwin, s8int.com, Science, Uncategorized | Posted by Chris Parker
Apr 22 2006

Greetings,

I was reading your website on the struggle between Creationism and Evolution, and I discovered an interesting quote by Charles Darwin. It is the quote on the development of the human eye…

“To suppose that the eye with all its inimitable contrivances for adjusting the focus to different distances, for admitting different amounts of light, and for the correction of spherical and chromatic aberration, could have been formed by natural selection, seems, I freely confess, absurd in the highest degree.” [The Origin of Man, Chapter 6.]

The problem with quoting this as a defense of Creationism is that it doesn’t take into consideration what Charles Darwin really believed. It was only his way, as a writer, of generating a thought in his readers. He later confesses, after piling over volumes of evidence…

“When we reflect on these facts, here given much too briefly, with respect to the wide, diversified, and graduated range of structure in the eyes of the lower animals; and when we bear in mind how small the number of all living forms must be in comparison with those which have become extinct, the difficulty ceases to be very great in believing that natural selection may have converted the simple apparatus of an optic nerve, coated with pigment and invested by transparent membrane, into an optical instrument as perfect as is possessed by any member of the articulate class.” [The Origin of Man, Chapter 6.]

In June of 1982, Ronald Reagan wrote “Marx was right.” But, he conclude his remark with, “We are witnessing today a great revolutionary crisis — a crisis where the demands of the economic order are colliding directly with those of the political order. But the crisis is happening not in the free, non-Marxist West, but in the home of Marxism-Leninism, the Soviet Union…. ” Wouldn’t it be a bit foolish to write a defense of Communism and Socialism, and begin it with the quote “Marx was right,” and attribute it to Ronald Reagan? Only a little more foolish than quoting Charles Darwin out of context in regards to the human eye, right?

Thanks for your time,

For Life,
“Visitor”

テつ

Dear Sir/Ma’am,テつテつ

Thank you for your note. Let me first say that I don’t for a moment agree that Reagan’s quote about Marxism is a fair comparison to Darwin’s quote about the eye. Setting that completely aside for a moment, perhaps with all do respect you have missed the point of our use of the quote.テつ Think about it; do you think that for one secondテつ we didn’tテつunderstand that Darwin despite the quote– Believed that the eye had evolved? On the contrary, Darwin recognized this potential problem butテつreasoned much as you’ve noted here that it (eye evolution) was accomplished in any case.

Darwin certainly; underestimated the complexity of the cell, supposed that many transitional fossils would be found (highlighting it as a key test of the theory) but was wrong, wrongly believed thatテつ mutation and natural selection had the power to serve as the engine of evolutionary change; wrongly interpreted Malthus and certainly in our humble opinion wouldn’t recognize the “science” that his theory fostered. However, especially with the recent advent of intelligent design theory and the notion of irreducible complexicity of biological systems like the eye, he may have, ironically enough really been on to something. Reagan did not for one moment intend to convey that Marxism was “correct” but Darwin in fact did intend to convey that; it must seem that a biological system as complex as the eye could not be formed by natural selection–and then goes on to list reasons why that would at least “appear” to be the case.

As a consequence, it is entirely proper for us, we believe, to quote him in the context that we do. Again not to imply that Darwin didn’t believe that the eye had evolved but rather that he recognized that his theory needed to hurdle this obstacle, which would in the mind of his readers he supposed, seem insurmountable.

We might very well make the same argument, only we would not go on to say that nevertheless, natural selection could accomplish it. Just as some might have believed that Saddam had something to do with 9-11, due to the proximity of his name to other comments by certain politicians about 9-11-some may misconstrue that quote–but surely only a few would believe that the “father” of evolutionary theory didn’t believe that the eye had evolved!

Maybe Behe should have given him some credit for the term “irreducible complexity” in his book–but that –that would have been as you say “foolish”. テつ Thanks for your time,
